The map shows where in Norway active mining of either metals or industrial minerals is taking place as of August 19th 2024. The map also shows the location of some of the most important projects being developed with a view to possible future production. Illustration by MCR, NGU.
Ensuring growing prosperity for an expanding global population requires vast amounts of metals and minerals. In addition, a range of metals and minerals are needed to manufacture and develop our emerging technologies and to secure sustainable energy production and storage. Norway has abundant mineral resources, and is a prominent European producer of mined and processed metals and minerals today.
The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) maps mineral resources to ensure Norwegian and European value creation and industrial development. The mapping performed by NGU is needed for informed decision making and good resource management.
Currently, NGU prioritizes the mapping of critical and strategic minerals and metals.
How do we identify minerals?
The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) identifies minerals in rocks using advanced instruments and in the laboratory, but also in the field by examining appearance, hardness, weight, cleavage, streak, luster, cleavage, and crystal structure.
