Sub-Projects

The Kola Ecogeochemistry Project consists of three distinct parts, or sub-projects.

  • First, a pilot project (1992-1993) was undertaken to map a 12,000 km2 area around the Nikel smelter complex in Russia, based on 45 sampling sites
  • Second, a catchment study (1994-1995) concentrated on eight carefully selected, relatively small (12 to 35 km2) drainage basins located in different geological settings, and at various distances from the pollution point-sources (5-300 km) and from the Barents Sea (40-300 km)
  • Third, a regional geochemical mapping program (1995-1996) was based on sampling at approximately 630 sites within an area of 188,000 km2 comprising all major landmass between the Arctic Circle and the Barents Sea, and between 24 and 35.5 degrees east of longitude
