This field excursion guide, 'The geology and ore deposits of the Pechenga Greenstone Belt', prepared for the International Field Conference and Symposium 'Layered Mafic Complexes and Related ore Deposits of Northern Fennoscandia, Finland, Norway, Russia ' in relation with the International Geological Correlation Program (IGCP) Project 336.
The report describes the cooperation between the Geological Surveys of Lithuania (GSL) and Norway (NGU) in the period 1992-96. GSL existed in 1992 primarily as an administrative body, governing the activities of state enter- prises which had existed prior to 1991.
Detailed mapping of a syn-orogenic intrusion and the surrounding rocks provides supporting evidence in favour of a recent re-interpretation of the stratigraphy of the Trondheim Nappe Complex (Sturt et.al.1994) The Tron intrusion lies within rocks of the Hummelfjell group. The preservation of folds within recry- stallised hornfels close to the intrusion confirms the presence of an old tectono-metamorphic event in these rocks.

189 samples collected from 21 Neoproterozoic sedimentary formations of the Varanger Peninsula, North Norway. The samples were analysed for major elements at the Institute of Precambrian Geology and Geochronology in St. Petersburg. Interpretation of basin development and its tectonic setting, and of the composition of the provenance area of clastic material were the main objectives of this work.

During the period 1992-1996, the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) and Finland (GTK) and the Central Kola E¤xpedition (CKE) are carrying out a joint project on eco-geochemical mapping and monitoring within an area extending from longi- tudes at 24° to 35.5° E with the Barents Sea as the northern project boundary and southward to the Arctic Circle in Finland and to the boundary between the Murmansk and Karelia regions in Russia. Geological mapping in scale 1:5000 in the Sokndal Lobe of the Bjerkreim-Sokndal layered norite intrusion has confirmed that cyclic unit no.IV of the magmatic stratigraphy comprise a high density of Fe-Ti oxide rich layers. The area naturally divides in the Ørsland, Bakka-Krune and Einebakka areas which indi- vidually are shaped as mega-lenses connested to each other via more narrow zones. However, seen together they comprise an open synfom dipping 40o to the west.
A combined geological, geophysical and geochemical exploration aimed at finding new ore reserves in the vicinity of the Bleikvassli mine, Nordland county was initiated by NGU in 1993. This report describes a regional soil (c-horizon/ weathered material) geochemical survey carried out as a part of this project. An area of 800 sq.km was sampled at a density of 1 sample per square kilometer.
