Primary and re-equilibrated mineral assemblages from the Sveconorwegian mafic intrusions of the Kongsberg and Bamble areas, Norway.John D. Brickwood, James W.
The KONTIKI final report summarises the results from the three-year KONTIKI project (CONTInental Crust and Heat Generation In 3D) established by NGU and StatoilHydro to improve the understanding of heat flow along the Norwegian continental margin. A compilation of c. 4000 new and old geochemical data is used to produce the first map of radiogenic heat production in bedrock, covering large tracts of Norway. In general granitic rocks have higher heat production than intermediate and mafic rocks.
The project has documented the existence of several previously unknown platinum group element (PGE) mineralizations in Norwegian ophiolites, of a type previously not well-documented anywhere, i.e. stratiform platinum- palladium-gold mineralization in ultramafic cumulates in ophiolites. PGE- bearing podiform chromitite and high level Ni-Cu sulphide mineralizations have also been studied.
Geodynamic modelling of the present crustal uplift indicates that the uplift of western Norway and northern Norway is partly due to other mechanisms that the glacioisostatic rebound. We have also deduced a new model based on the 'seismic pumping' mechanism to explain the observed correlation between land uplift and groundwater yield in Norway.
Bedrock geology of the Altevatn-Måskanvarri area, Indre Troms, northern Scandinavian Caledonides.
