Summary
The geology and structural history of the Precambrian metamorphic basement in the northern part of the Skoganvarre district, Finnmark are described. The most important supracrustal rock types present are quartzofeldspatic, quartzitic, calcareous and micaceous schists of sedimentary origin, and amphibolitic schists derived by the metamorphism of mafic volcanic and intrusive igneous rocks. The supracrustal rocks of the Karasjok group are considered to rest unconformably upon the Archean Basal gneiss complex within this area, although the latter is likely to be allochthonous in status. All of these lithologies were complexly deformed and intruded by synorogenic magmatic bodies during the Svecokarelian Orogeny, about 1900 Ma. Some consideration is given to the regional correlation of the various rock suites.
