Nature types' and biotopes

Nature types and biotope areas are mapped under various marine geology projects at NGU. These data sets are used by various authorities, including government agencies, for activities such as urban planning.

When we classify nature types, information about environmental conditions serves as a basis. It is first and foremost physical conditions that determine which species that can live in a given area. Datasets on climatic, hydrological, topographic and geological conditions are essential for this classification.

A biotope is an area with a combination of  species living in the same physical environment. Biotope maps are an important part of the innovative science being developed during MAREANO's mapping and are used for assessment of vulnerability, species richness and uniqueness of a site. This information is important when implementing plans for use of the marine areas and management activities.
