Increasing urbanization may threaten the sustainable development and our cities.

Therefore, the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) action group SUB-URBAN, has been established to work to improve knowledge of the subsurface of European cities.

The potential of a city's subsurface has often overlooked or underestimated. The main goal of COST-Action SUB-URBAN is to facilitate better interaction between researchers, who produce subsurface knowledge, with those who can most benefit from this knowledge: decision makers, practitioners and the wider research community.

In order to maximise the economic, social and environmental benefits of urban subsurface resources and ecosystem services on which cities depend, SUB-URBAN will 1) Assemble research capabilities in the area 3D/4D characterisation;  2) Disseminate of various visualizations of the subsurface: 3) Train, support and advice decision makers and other end-users; 4) Foster development of policy which reflects the importance of the urban subsurface; and 5) Produce recommendations  for improved accessibility of subsurface data.
