Facts about the Løkken Drill Core Archive (NBPS)
Eksteriørbilde av NGUs lager på Løkken Verk.

  • NGU’s center in Løkken, Orkland Municipality, was established in 1991 as a support function for Norway’s ore and mineral industry.
  • The earliest acquired samples stored at the center date back to drilling operations at Løkken Mines in 1906.
  • The increasing demand for mineral resources, new applications, improved analytical methods, and advancing geological knowledge are driving forces behind the re-examination of stored drill cores. Both the industry and the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) are now re-examining drill cores from the archive." The majority of the material is available to the public, mining and exploration companies, consultants and researchers.

Sample Material

In addition to drill cores, the center houses sample materials related to:

  • Dimmension stone
  • Environmental geology
  • Marine geology
  • Quaternary geology
  • General geological mapping
  • Reference materials from NGU’s laboratories

Content and Data

You can open the map in full screen.

Drill cores stored at Løkken are also displayed in the mineral resources map. The map provides information about:

  • Drill core category
  • Drilled length
  • Stored length
  • Core diameter
  • Orientation
  • Inclination
  • Coordinates (location)

Drill core logs are available for many of the drill cores. Most of these reports are stored in the archives at the Directorate of Mineral Management with the Mining Commissioner for Svalbard.

Logging facilities and assistance

The logging room at Løkken is equipped with a rolling table for drill cores. The table has a capacity of 15 standard drill core boxes.

NGUs personnel will retrieve the cores from the storage and place them in the logging room, making them available for you.
