With the help of radar measurements from satellites, called InSAR (INterferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) we can potentially measure the extent of deformation with millimeter accuracy. Thousands of satellite images collected over time are compared to detect movement at over 5 000 000 000 points distributed across most of Norway.
Who has made InSAR Norway?
In 2018, The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU), the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE), and the Norwegian Space Agency launched InSAR in Norway, which is a nationwide, freely accessible and web-based map service for InSAR data.
The service makes InSAR data available to the whole of Norway. The research institute NORCE is central in the development of the technology.
