Organic Stream Sediments

Rationale
The suspended organic material in a stream strongly adsorbs trace metals and is, therefore, suited for the characterisation of its level of contamination. It is sampled with a large net (Fig. 1) in slow flowing portion of the stream.

Advantages
Gives an idea of the organically bound fraction of the contaminants.

Drawbacks
Fine mineral matter (esp. micas) is collected in various quantities together with the suspended organic matter.
