In memory of Igor N. Demidov

Igor graduated from the Leningrad Mining Institute in 1979. After completing his PhD he joined the Institute of Geology at the Karelian Branch of the Academy of Science. From this position he built a strong scientific career investigating the Quaternary history of Karelia, which was close to his heart until the end.

In 1995 Igor became leader of the palaeoenvironmental group in his institution, a position he held until he died. As a leader his first priorities were always the scientific development and the well being of the people in the group.

At the international level Igor was very active in the ESF QUEEN program, and he was Russian representative to the steering committee of the ESF APEX program, a position he had to give up earlier this year due to his illness. From the early 1990's until last year, he organized expeditions to many parts of North-western Russia. Many scientists, especially western scientists, are very grateful for the time and expertise he shared with them on these expeditions. As a scientist Igor was constantly searching for the pieces of evidence that were contributing to the puzzle of geological history. Often in the field he would say: "I think you should rather come and take a look at what I found over here", and he was always right. He had a certain eye for finding the missing pieces, and best places to work, to solve the big questions. He also had great knowledge of Russian history, and was more than willing to share it with others. He helped train many of us in the geology of North-western Russia.  He was also a keen communicator, and many field assistants and helpers on expeditions enjoyed this quality in him. Sad as it is now, Igor has left us with many fond memories and funny situations that will be revived around future campfires.

May Igor N. Demidov rest in peace.

On behalf of friends and colleagues,

Eiliv Larsen

Our dear friend and good colleague, Igor N. Demidov died on October 16, 2007.  Igor was just over 50 years old, when his courageous fight against the illness came to an end.
