CV
I am working at NGU with:
1. Alkali-reactivity of quartz in concrete aggregate (ASR). Why do some quartzes react, and others not?
2. Applied mineralogy on a range of materials.
In 1992, I graduated at Utrecht University, majoring in mineralogy with a second major in experimental petrology. My graduation thesis was on stable isotope systematics of C and O in calc-silicate rocks and graphite from the Bamble sector, SE Norway, and was partly published in American Journal of Science (Broekmans et al 1994).
During my initial employment at a Dutch concrete engineering consultancy, I discovered in 1994 that deleterious alkali-silica reaction (ASR) did occur widespread in The Netherlands, contrary to popular belief. Eventually, this spawned two nationwide research programs: 1) to prevent deleterious ASR to occur in new concrete structures (from 1995), and 2) assessment of ASR damage in existing structures, including both structural and material aspects (from 1998). Both projects were coordinated by CUR (Centre for Civil Engineering Research and Codes, Gouda/NL). CUR guideline 89 for ASR prevention was published in Dutch in 2002 and revised in 2006. CUR guideline 102 was published in Dutch in 2005. Both guidelines were translated to English in 2008 for publication at the 13th ICAAR in June 2008 in Trondheim.
In 1997, I moved to Norway to complete my PhD thesis from Utrecht University, the Netherlands, on deleterious ASR in Dutch concrete and the characterization of silica in Dutch and Ohio cherts and Norwegian mylonite (Broekmans 2002, free download here).
I have been contributing to the Norwegian national “Forum for Alkali-Reactions In Norway” (FARIN) since its establishment in 1999, as a continuation of the then completed NORMIN 2000 project on alkali reactions. The forum serves as a sounding board for 'everything AAR in Norway', and has been or still is involved in eg. field projects, conference organizing (9th EMABM 2003, 13th ICAAR 2008), academic promotions at local university NTNU, round-robin testing of aggregate, and accreditation of petrographic operators. In 2006, I was invited as Chairman of the IMA-CAM subcommission on “Mineralogy Applied to Building Materials”.
Since 2007, I have contributed to RILEM TC-219 ACS (Technical Committee 219 - Alkali-aggregate reactions in Concrete Structures), as team leader for one team to produce a pictorial atlas of potentially alkali-reactive rock types across the globe, and for another team assessing release of alkalis from aggregate materials.
I was editor-in-chief for all publications at the 13th ICAAR on 16-20 June 2008 in Trondheim. The 13th ICAAR Proceedings have been subject to a thorough journal-style peer-review process and officially qualify as 'scientific contribution' by the Norwegian National Library. In April 2010, Cement & Concrete Resereach published a Special Issue (pages 501-680) with 19 selected papers from the 13th ICAAR Proceedings, for which issue I served as Guest Editor.
From July 2006-January 2010, I have served as Associate Editor on the permanent staff for ‘Materials Characterization’, for Elsevier Scientific Publishers.
In October 2009, I was appointed Editor-in-Chief for a major reference work 'Comprehensive Materials Characterization', again for Elsevier Scientific at Oxford. The completed work will comprise 8400 pages in 12 volumes, each volume covering one particular technique and/or instrument, eg. visual light microscopy, SEM-EDS, TEM, XRD, NMR. The work is scheduled for publications in 2012/2013, and will emphasize on electronic accessibility, featuring online videos, animations and the like, which cannot be presented in traditional printed work.
From 1-5 August 2011, the 10th International Congress for Applied Mineralogy (ICAM) will be held in Trondheim (see www.icam2011.org). I am chairman of the Scientific Committee and Editor-in-Chief for all publications. I have served as vice-president on the ICAM Council since winning the bidding at the 9th ICAM in Brisbane/AU 2008.
