Soapstone - dimension stone

The use of soapstone has a more than thousand years tradition in Scandinavia. In most of the soapstone deposits in Norway traces of such use for necessary equipment and building stone can be seen in where they have been accessible for the populating people. Today the use of soapstone is as building material and making ovens and fireplaces. The strongly increasing prices on electricity have led to very significant increased use as ovens and fireplaces.

The soapstone deposits in the Linnajavri area have massive soapstone, only locally foliated. They include variation in color and structure. The soapstones have been samples by chain saw for the potential exploitable deposits for dimension stone. More than 100 slabs or small blocks of soapstone have been collected and they have been scanned or photographed and entered in the national database for dimension stone. It is also presented on the reports from the PNASTINA-project and can be found on net (www.pnastina.se).

The reserves of soapstone as dimension stone in the Linnajavri area are huge and may be taken out parallel with quarrying for soapstone for talc floatation. The resource could be exploited for generations to come.
