GeoHab (Marine Geological
and Biological Habitat Mapping) was established in 2001 to bring together
scientists from around the world working on the development of new
thematic maps linking acoustic mapping and geological sampling to marine
biology in a Geographical Information System environment to underpin
sustainable ocean management.
GeoHab is an international
forum which meets annually and is designed to:
-
maintain
awareness of technological developments and survey standards
-
identify
existing metadata sources relevant to marine habitat mapping
-
develop new
thematic maps useful for fisheries management, biodiversity
management, and the assessment of future Marine Protected
Areas (MPAs)
-
encourage
standardization of maps through the creation of a habitat
mapping glossary and building links to marine mapping
agencies worldwide
-
apply and
evaluate habitat classification systems using real-world
examples
