Natural Stone

Natural stone is a term used for all stone that can be cut or shaped into blocks and slabs for variety of applications. It can be applied to floors, walls and ceilings or made into bricks and grave monuments. Natural stone, therefore, can be used in a wide range of products: from polished kitchen granite counters to the common "graystone" traditionally used to build dry-stone walls.

NGU maintains a natural stone database for Norway. This database contains information on deposits that currently being quarried or mined, or have been active in the past, as well as deposits that could be quarried in the future.  Some former quarries are of great historic value. In addition to the natural stone used for the building, the database has information on valuable stones used throughout the ages; for example, soapstone for pots, mica schist for millstones and quartz-mica-schist for whetstones.
