NGU has been involved in studies of stratigraphy and stability of the Norwegian continental shelf and slope.
Seismic interpretation of shelf stratigraphy outside Mid-Norway. Over the past few years, the work has been focused on the Mid-Norwegian shelf, where several large slides have occurred over the past 10 000 years. The background for this is Norsk Hydro's development of the Ormen Lange gas field, which is located right beneath the scar of the Storegga Slide. Security for installations and human beings has been a major issue in the field development project.
NGU is a partner in the International Centre for Geohazards (ICG) with the Marine Geology group participating in the subproject Offshore Geohazards through studies of slides and slide processes in Finneidfjord and Trondheim harbour. Within the framework of the ICG we also study recent and ancient slides on the continental slope.
