Gas hydrates and shallow gas

Seabed pockmarks indicate leakages of gas or fluids from the subsurface.Research on gas hydrates and shallow gas is a major activity within Marine Geology.

Pockmarks in the Oslofjord.Pockmarks in the Oslofjord. In 2006, the project "Gas hydrates on the Norway-Barents Sea - Svalbard margin" was started in close cooperation with the Norwegian Deep Water Programme/Seabed III and several research institutions and universities. Gas hydrates may be important in stability evaluations of the seabed, for climatic and ecological considerations, and may also play a role as a geological resource because of their high methane content. Shallow gas may originate from sedimentary bedrock or sediments below the seabed. We have considerable experience in mapping of sedimentary rocks in fjords and coastal areas of Norway. This information is used by oil companies during petroleum exploration.
