World heritage

UNESCO, the UN organisation for education, science, culture and communication, has granted the mining town of Røros, the Vega archipelago, Geirangerfjorden and Nærøyfjorden the status of world heritage areas.

However, a world heritage area or site must be protected nationally in order to achieve this status.
 
The distinctiveness of these areas can be traced back to unique geological stories. NGU has contributed in the process of making the applications for world heritage status and in providing tourist information related to these areas. We are also involved in new applications currently in preparation.
