National tourist roads

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is facilitating adventures for tourists along designated roads, called National Tourist Roads. The roads wind across or close to stunning landscapes, fjords, coastlines, mountains and waterfalls, inviting tourists to world-class nature adventures. The landscape along these scenic routes has an exciting geological history.

Picture by Magne Flemsæter, Norwegian Public Roads Administration.By the year 2015, 18 designated road sections, together adding up to a distance of 1850 kilometres, will achieve status as national tourist roads. Exciting picnic areas, with trekking and photography opportunities, will be laid out along the roadsides. These areas will be constructed in harmony with the surroundings in order to emphasize the nature experience. Opportunities for fishing, waterfall viewing and mountain trekking, with nearby accommodation facilities and cultural experiences, will also be possible along these roads.

NGU has already provided information on the geology and nature along national tourist roads in Rondane and Nordland.
