NGU manages the national database of sand, gravel and aggregates deposits in Norway, and carries out national mapping surveys of superficial deposits.

Quick clays are a challenge when constructing roads. It may cause large damage to infrastructure and settlement, in addition to raising the cost of road construction. Information on areas with potential quick clays is available from the national landslide database, www.skrednett.no. NGU has been involved in many projects  mapping quick-clay deposits, and developing methods for detecting quick clays.
