Buildings

Subsidence of the ground causes damage to, amongst others, buildings. A method based on radar measurements from satellites (InSAR) can map ground  subsidence and vertical movement of structures, such as (single) buildings.

In co-operation with the city of Oslo such subsidence mapping is carried out in central parts of the city.

Mapping of radon hazard in the GEOS region

NGU has in co-operation with the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority (Statens Strålevern) established a correlation between airborne measurements of radiation with measurements of indoor radon-exposure. Maps showing areas with potential elevated radon concentrations are a new product from this co-operation.

Airborne detection of zones with deep weathering

Airborne geophysical survey have also provided new data and understanding for the mapping of zones where deep weathering of the bedrock occurs. The location and extent of such zones are important parameters for the construction of underground infrastructure and facilities.
