Landfills

Abandoned landfill sites are found in most Norwegian cities. Landfill gas (LFG) is actively generated in many of these landfills.

Landfills_Ladefyllingen"Ladefyllingen" is an example of a landfill in an urban area within Trondheim municipality. The landfill was closed in 1970. The area has been developed further following closure of the landfill. The picture is taken in 1969.

LFG consists mainly of methane and carbon dioxide. LFG constitutes a health risk, and methane from LFG is also a greenhouse gas.

Urban development

Closed-down landfills constitute a health and environmental challenge for the municipalities because most have a need for urban development areas for residential, industrial and service purposes.

The Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) is engaged in assessing the health and environmental issues associated with urban development on former landfills, in collaboration with municipalities, health authorities and consultants.

Reduce greenhouse-gas emissions

Methane emissions from landfills contribute 3 - 4 % of the total Norwegian greenhouse-gas emissions according to Statistics Norway. Methane as a greenhouse gas has an impact that is 23 times stronger than carbon dioxide.

NGU is assessing controlled removal of LFG to help reduce greenhouse-gas emissions.
